Sad News

June 15, 2010 - 1:47pm

I just learnt the sad news about Brother Blues death. I live in the UK and saw Brother Blue in a film called Knightriders (1981), directed by George Romero. Brother Blue played a character called Merlin and had butterflies painted on his hands and head. He showed his skill as a story teller in that film when he told the story of King Arthur to the character played by Ed Harris.

That film had a great story so it was appropriate that it had a great story teller.

I've read other comments on this site and found that the personality he portrayed in the film was his real personality. It makes me sorry I never met him. He will be missed.

I just now learned of Brother Blue's passing and I am weeping.

When I was a little girl, I designed a "Brother Blue Mobile" for him, based on a revamped ice cream truck with a drop side for a stage and covered with rainbows and butterflies.

I grew up hanging out in Harvard Square and would run across him and his lovely Ruth time and time again, and he always remembered my name, asked after my father, and gave me a big dose of joy and love, which I badly needed at that time.

I called him about five years ago, to tell him how important he had been to me as a child and young woman, and how I tried to pass on some of his joy for living and being to everybody I meet. I'm so glad I made that call.

Brother Blue, I LOVE YOU!

Brother Blue... Another Dad I Had

May 11, 2010 - 3:45pm

Brother Blue was true
through and through
true from the beginning,
true till the end begins again

He would touch you with a word
tell you with the smile in his eye
He did not lie in wait and prey
Blue lived today in another way

He'd say... "this is true
from the middle of the middle of me
to the middle of the middle of you..."

immediately, without another word
you knew what to do...
... think things through
move as though
the world is moving
through you

All that matters is in your soul
live for mo' than a Fool's goal
money and stuff, necessary
but they ain't ya home

Be true to you, just be true
do all you do from the middle of you
but know you been touched
by Brother Blue.

Thank you for the stories

Blue - you introduced me to a world of story and showed me how rich and wonderful it could be. With your passion and firmly held belief that storytelling can change the world I fell in love with this oldest of art forms. Whatever I may be as a storyteller I owe to you. Thank you for everything - I will never forget you,

Duncan

Brother Blue has embarked on a new adventure. I'm sure the sky is a brighter blue for his presence. What an audience he now has for his stories!

Brother Blue

April 24, 2010 - 5:02pm

Brother Blue was a brilliant and unique performance artist. He was a gentle, loving soul who inspired many. I had the honor of improvising piano music/accompianing him while he told stories Live on WBUR-FM radio in Boston in 1977. We recorded 4 stories together - about 1 hour - one take, Live on the air. I recently found the master studio tape of them in my storage - what a treasure! He was a great spiritual inspiration to me then, and always will be.

Looking for a Public Domain Photo of Blue

April 4, 2010 - 3:16pm

Hi All,

I am working on Brother Blue's Wikipedia page, and I would like to put up a photo. I need a photo in the public domain, such as one that been put into the Creative Commons. If anyone knows of one, please point me to it. If anyone has a good photo of Blue that he/she would be willing to put into the public domain, please contact me and I will show you how to do that.

Blue was my friend and mentor while I went to Harvard in the 80s. His weekly storytelling workshop was one of the high points of my college experience.

If anyone sees Ruth, please send her my sincere condolences.

With love for Blue and all he touched,
